Call for CIMPA-ICTP Fellowships 2023 "Research in Pairs"

The CIMPA-ICTP fellowships program "Research in Pairs" makes it possible for researchers in mathematics based in a developing country to come to Europe to collaborate with a colleague. It is expected that these two persons will work together on a well-substantiated research project, mainly in the institute of the European colleague. We will give priority to candidates who are scientifically active despite a challenging environment and/or heavy teaching, supervision, or administrative duties, and who did not get many travel opportunities in the last 5 years.

The maximum amount of support is 10,000 euros. Alone or with other supports, this should cover all the costs (transportation, accommodation, insurance, PCR test, visa etc.) of the laureate during the entire visit. The amount is determined based on the length and location of the laureate. It can only cover her/his personal costs. The minimal duration for the stay is 6 weeks with at least 35 days for the research project and a week for recording/broadcasting 8 hours mini-course (see below).

Applications for a visit between January and the December 2023 are open until 1st of July and must be submitted through an online form that will soon be available. A PDF version of this form is available, containing the fields to be filled out as well as additional details on the terms and conditions.

Specificities of this call:

  • The candidate is a researcher who defended her/his PhD thesis more than 4 years ago and who has been employed in an academic institution in a developing country for the last 5 years at the time of the application;
  • The European colleague is a researcher holding a PhD in mathematics who will be based, throughout the candidate’s entire stay, in one of the following countries: Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland;
  • During his/her time in Europe, the laureate will record/broadcast a mini-course (approximately 8 hours, in French or English) on mathematics at master/beginning of PhD level. Note that this is an important part of the application as the lectures will become an exemplary course for all students who want to learn about this topic. It needs therefore to be prepared with great care. This course will be recorded during a week at Nice, ICTP or another possible research center and will usually require an extra week on top of the collaboration period.
  • The laureate and his/her colleague may propose to carry out part of their collaboration during a week at one of the partner centers located in the host’s country: CRM for Spain, CIRM for France or the Netherlands, FIM for Switzerland, ICTP for Italy, or MFO for Germany. For the laureates staying in Norway, there is currently no such option. The cost of the colleague’s stay (but not the travel) will be covered by the partner center. The travel and stay of the laureate will be covered by the grant.
  • During the submission process, an email will be sent to the host colleague asking her/him to provide further details and to upload a supporting letter for this application. Note that the letter is of crucial importance to evaluate the commitment of the host and the success of the application. An application without letter will not be evaluated.
