IMA Statement on Ukraine

IMA President Paul Glendinning has issued the following statement on behalf of the IMA regarding the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications supports UK and international actions against the Russian state attack on Ukraine, which is in violation of international law. The IMA regards the Russian invasion as an attack on the fundamental values of freedom, democracy and self-determination, which in turn provide the basis for academic freedom and opportunities for academic co-operation. We are in strong solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our mathematical colleagues.

Although the IMA is an advocate for international scientific cooperation, at this stage we support the European Mathematical Society’s recommendations that academic co-operation with state institutions and business enterprises in Russia are frozen and no new co-operations should be initiated at the present time. We too are aware of the consequences of these measures and their detrimental impact on science. In this regard our solidarity also goes to Russian academics and scholars who are themselves horrified at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
